Moving home is a stressful time for anyone, so here are a few hints & tips to help the process go as smoothly as possible. Most of these will seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at the amount of people that forget them when they have other things related to the move on their minds!
Ensure you have sufficient packing materials:
We can supply boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap prior to your move so you can begin to pack ahead, at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Only pack the items you definitely will not need and remember to label boxes as you go, this will make it easier when un-packing at the other end.
Please be sure to pack all items especially fragile items carefully, ensuring breakables are wrapped individually in paper. Beware of using old newspapers as the print can rub off and make your possessions dirty and sometimes stain them. If you are using newspaper a good idea is to wrap them in kitchen roll first as this will give added protection and avoid nasty print marks.
Where possible try to use boxes as bags are easily torn and difficult to stack. It is a good idea to use your luggage and suitcases to pack some of your things especially clothing and shoes.
Take care with soft furnishings such as your sofas. Do not place heavy or sharp cornered items on these as they may tear or mark them easily.
Do not overload boxes:
When packing, please ensure you do not overload boxes. Large boxes should be used for bulky items and smaller boxes should be used for small heavy items such as books and paper work. Our staff are fully trained, although they are not body builders so if you cant lift it yourself then you know it has been over packed and it may burst under the strain of being lifted.
Do not Under-load boxes:
Where possible, try to distribute boxes as evenly as possible. This ensures that boxes which are stacked for
transit/Storage do not collapse if heavy boxes are placed on top of them.
Food & Household appliances:
Food should be removed from cupboards and packed prior to your move. Remember to make sure all caps and lids are secured to avoid spillage and it is a good idea to put bottles that may leak into plastic bags before packing. Defrost your fridge and freezer no later than the day before and ensure all appliances that contain water such as your
fridge/freezer and washing machine are drained and dried out before the move.
The Day of your move:
Ensure all paperwork & personal items you may need on the day of the move are kept separate and to one
side. These things may include all paperwork related to your move, any medication required, credit cards,
keys, wallets & mobile phones. Keep aside your kettle, tea/coffee and cups and a vacuum cleaner for a final run over before you hand in your keys. Remember to take a note of your gas and electric meter readings before you leave.
It is also a good idea to double check that the house is empty including behind all doors and high
shelves. Remember to check the garage/shed and all outbuildings, any cupboards and your attic.
